He smells them long before he sees them. He’s gotten a lot better at discerning scents, using the extra abilities that came along with his curse and these scents send a jolt of surprise through him.

Aside from the oddity between Aidan and himself he knows other werewolves and vampires don’t get along. But these two scents, one vampire and the other werewolf are mingles together like his and Aidan’s.

They smell a bit different though, less wild, less violent but still dangerous and he’s not sure what to make of that. He follows it, winds through the hallways awkwardly because he doesn’t know what to think of their presence, he just hopes they’re not hurting anyone.

Aidan joins him along the way, probably thinking the same as him, at least in general.

“You smell them, right?” he asks, giving Aidan a concerned, wide eyed look.

Aidan doesn’t deem his question answerable and Josh can smell the faint wisp of exasperation. He cringes and ducks his head.

“Why are they different?”

Aidan glances at him briefly. “He’s pure vampire, though I don’t know how because all the pure vampires were supposed to have died.”

“Wait, ‘pure vampire?’ Are you telling me you’re like, only sort of a vampire?”

Aidan chuckles mirthlessly, “In a sense, yeah. Pure vampires ruled the old civilizations, ruled the world until humans fought back. No one will admit it but all the vampires walking around now are tainted, lesser versions of the vampires of old.”

Josh stops and stares at him. The impromptu vampire history lesson hadn’t exactly been what he was looking for but knowing it made things make a lot more sense. The vampires had superiority issues because they’d once been in charge and dominant. He wonders if that’s their plan, to get enough people in enough influential places and re-take over the world.

He can’t see Aidan doing something but Bishop? Definitely.

Aidan turns to one of the closed patient rooms and Josh inhales the smells around him. They’re in there, alone, doing god knows what but at least it wasn’t something he was going to be embarrassed walking in on.

“Are you freaking out?” Aidan teases.

“Shut up,” Josh glares at him. “Open the door.”

Henry is nothing like Ray. For one, he was born a werewolf and didn’t have to follow the lunar cycle, but he understands Josh a lot better than Ray ever did. He understands the desire to live as normal as possible, the burning self hatred and the fear over what could happen if someone normal ever found out. He knows what its like to feel out of control in your own skin.

“How do you live with it?”

Josh and Henry are situated - rather closely - on the couch together. Josh refuses to call it was it looks like because it was nothing like that. Henry just smells really good, natural, and it feels right. Aidan, and the vampires in general, smell revolting though he was getting used to Aidan and it wasn’t so bad anymore. Human’s varied, some were worse than others but on most days he could take it, block it out as best as he was able to.

“For the longest time I couldn’t. I took pills that suppressed my wolf and even contemplated a risky brain surgery that could have had an untold effect on me. I’m still not one hundred percent comfortable but I’m better.”

“How’d you get used to it?”

Henry shrugs, “I work with abnormals. I see the good and the bad all the time and I guess I just slowly started accepting that what I was wasn’t always that bad. It has its upsides, I just focusing on the downsides.”

Josh sighs, “There’s not a lot of upsides for me.”

Henry’s arm snakes around his shoulders in a one armed hug. “I’ll talk to Magnus, see if there’s anything we can do to help.”

“Aww, aren’t you two adorable,” Sally materializes in front of them, grinning.

Josh sits up straight, face heating up and Henry chuckles.

“Sally, was there something about ‘can we have some privacy?’ that you didn’t understand?” Josh asks, a little annoyed but mostly embarrassed.

“I know, but its kind of boring and the vamps are pouting at each other,” Sally replies only looking a little apologetic.

Josh raises an eyebrow, “Pouting?”

Sally shrugs, “Well, Aidan’s pouting. Tesla’s continuing to knock him down a few pegs on the vampire scale. I think it was the guy’s ability to conduct electricity that really did it.”

Josh looks to Henry for an explanation which turns out to be not at all reassuring.

“He’s a megalomaniac, but also a genius and it’s not like he tries to kill us.”

Sally laughs and Josh doesn’t know why its so amusing but if Henry was okay with it than Josh was going to trust his judgement. Besides, with the amount of mistakes that Aidan had made since the two of them moved in together, Josh really had no reason to say anything against Henry’s vampire.

“Hey man, you okay?” Henry’s hand clasps his right shoulder.

Josh starts. Sally had left and Henry was looking at him worried but honestly, for the first time since becoming a werewolf Josh felt good, like things were really looking up. His best friends were a vampire and a ghost, he was talking to his sister again, if not a lot, and now he had Henry.
